Advanced--Plays Weekly--Used 6-10 reedmakers--Reedmaking: Buy but adjust
These are wonderful reeds that produce a rich, full tone with good harmonic balance. In fact, as a woodwind doubler, they are the best all around oboe reeds I have ever played on. Very responsive in the low range, great mid-range. Highs are better than acceptable on the MS and good on M. The medium soft is very flexible (some may say wild), sometimes even a bit flat and the medium (pr0) reeds are sometimes a bit resistant, but they are all workable. A mix of the characteristics of the two strengths would be an ideal reed for me. I will be buying most of my oboe reeds from North Texas Oboe Reeds and Cane as long as they remain this reliable. Please note that reeds purchased directly from the maker tend to be of slightly better quality than those produced for the double reed catalog companies. More attention to detail is evident. Please also take this into consideration when reading people’s reviews of this maker!
Intermediate--Plays Most days--Used 6-10 reedmakers--Reedmaking: Buy but adjust
Reeds are fantastic! I have only played on the pro reeds but they have a nice dark sound. They are a little too resistant for my tastes but a little scraping fixes them right up.
Professional--Used 6-10 reedmakers--Plays most days--Buys but adjusts
This review is for the Deluxe Student Reeds only (the only reeds I’ve tried lately). These are a true bargain. I have been suggesting the deluxe student reeds, MS-M, to my beginning students (first year or two of playing) for about a year now. Normally I would not consider a machine-profiled reed, but these are so inexpensive, I gave them a try. They are remarkably dark for a machine-profiled reed, thanks to hand-cut windows. My students like them, and say they feel comfortable to play on. They are a little stiffer than I like for some absolute beginners (first month of playing,) but perfect for developing players, since the reeds are capable of a full sound. They also have a feel similar to more professional and expensive reeds–no weird dimensions. It seems like the usual batting average applies–order 3, you get 2 good ones and one that would be okay for practicing on at home.

The reeds are stable, they are suitable to play in the range of 440 to 442. But the opening it’s too big and a bit too dark, so, I have to sqeeze a little to adjust until the reeds can play high notes easily ~ Recommend to all .
Very nice English horn reeds. Oboe reeds a bit too open for my tastes, but seem well-made. Has been a while since I have ordered oboe reeds from here, so they may be different now.
Wait time is horrible. I usually order more than one reed because its hit or miss if all of them work. When they work they are wonderful, but most of the time there are major pitch problems and wait times. Great refund system though
cokomo January 31, 2012: Lyn Davies I don’t know if the reed stock is different or what, but I have just purchased three reeds from Rush’s and the next day two of them were cracked.
geekygeek January 28, 2012: Jones Double Reed Products Good for beginners, and the medium soft is quite easily to blow on. Pretty durable and consistent. They’re good beginner reeds but the sound quality isn’t so fantastic. I use just a regular knife (even though you should buy a...
Anonymous January 14, 2012: SUGGESTION BOX Thank you so much for this site. I have a limited # of manufacturers where I lived, and they all sound bad( Jones, Emerald, Richards). Anyway, you could improve the collected ratings page by sepeating them by area(USA, Asia, Australia, Canada,...
Anonymous January 14, 2012: The Reedmaker For me, these reeds are the best. I ordered three reeds from him and two of them were too hard, so I sent them back, and he scraped more and threw another one in! Every one of them were the best sounding reeds I have played so far, not that I have...

Klezmer January 4, 2012: Reed Expression Normall have made my own for years, but do not have the time. I purchased 5 medium-soft German scrape reeds. I just adjusted them to my own chops and all five play very well. They respond easy and have very good intonation. I am trying a couple EH...

By far the most stable and consistent reeds I’ve tried.
north texas is the best! my teacher recommends them. so do my private lesson teacher and i. i
Pretty hard to blow against. The reed wasn’t quite vibrant enough, but when I scraped the heart, the whole thing destabilized.

I used to use these reeds until he got a little too popular. Then they quickly went downhill. Consistently overscraped and unsalvagable.
do not last past two weeks??????

wonderful sound, but do not last past 2 wks
It was a wait. I am a beginner. They were soft. Worked OK, but didn’t hold up. I probably need medium hard.
Slow response time with online ordering.
