Advanced--Plays Most days--Used 2-5 reedmakers--Reedmaking: Usually make my own reeds
I am so sad that Valerie (Jeanne) is not making even gouged cane anymore. My teacher refuses store bought reeds. I was making my own on Valieries stuff and doing well, then changing has been a problem.
I took up HB as an experiment, not for new reeds, but just for cane. I tried to make 10 out of 10, knowing full well I might get 3 out of ten.
I took my reeds to my teacher, who looked at my knife work and told me it was beautiful. My teacher is very honest with me. We could not make them play nicely. The cane is horrible.
Advanced--Plays Most days--Used 6-10 reedmakers--Reedmaking: Buy but adjust
The reeds arrived very rapidly, only two or three days after I ordered them. They are clearly very carefully scraped, and they have a nice sound, with soft attacks possible on the low notes. The reeds were very consistent from one to another. The mediums I ordered had slightly more resistance than I prefer (but I rather doubt I’d like “soft”). My only other quibble is that none of the three reeds were sufficiently stable in pitch for F, F#, and G in the second octave. Maybe it’s just an interaction with my specific oboe (a Rigoutat J). Anyway, I’m sure many would be happy with HB reeds.
I would be lost without HB Oboe reeds! They have a very steady feel. At the same time, they allow for a wide range of dynamic and stylistic expression. I can tell that the reed maker pays close attention to detail on each reed I have ordered. I have tried ordering reeds from other sites, but none have compared to HB Oboe reeds.
cokomo January 31, 2012: Lyn Davies I don’t know if the reed stock is different or what, but I have just purchased three reeds from Rush’s and the next day two of them were cracked.
geekygeek January 28, 2012: Jones Double Reed Products Good for beginners, and the medium soft is quite easily to blow on. Pretty durable and consistent. They’re good beginner reeds but the sound quality isn’t so fantastic. I use just a regular knife (even though you should buy a...
Anonymous January 14, 2012: SUGGESTION BOX Thank you so much for this site. I have a limited # of manufacturers where I lived, and they all sound bad( Jones, Emerald, Richards). Anyway, you could improve the collected ratings page by sepeating them by area(USA, Asia, Australia, Canada,...
Anonymous January 14, 2012: The Reedmaker For me, these reeds are the best. I ordered three reeds from him and two of them were too hard, so I sent them back, and he scraped more and threw another one in! Every one of them were the best sounding reeds I have played so far, not that I have...
Peter VandeBurgt January 14, 2012: SUGGESTION BOX The link to my eBay site has changed; here’s the new link. Thanks for good work! http://www.ebay.ca/itm/2807606 26694?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:I T&_trksid=p3984.m1586.l264 9
Klezmer January 4, 2012: Reed Expression Normall have made my own for years, but do not have the time. I purchased 5 medium-soft German scrape reeds. I just adjusted them to my own chops and all five play very well. They respond easy and have very good intonation. I am trying a couple EH...

I really loved these reeds. I have tried at LEAST 9 reed companies, and these guys are by far the best

HB Oboe reeds are fantastic! The reeds are so precisely balanced to the tip and always consistent. I’d recommend them to anyone!
New page up for HB oboe reeds.
